ABOUT ABOUT

BEGINNER SHORT-FORM IMPROV
Students will learn the art of comedic short-form improvisation. Through a series of fun and engaging classes, students will utilize learned skills in listening, agreement, and the power of “Yes and…” to play confidently in games. The first half of the course will focus on the basics of improv comedy and the second half will focus on playing and performing short-form games. The course will culminate in a live performance of a short-form set by the students.

INSTRUCTOR
Sam Abrams

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR
Sam Abrams has been teaching with the PHIT Kids and Teens Program since its first session in the spring of 2015. Sam can be seen performing at PHIT Comedy in the Family Friendly show Finders Keepers, the house team Swan Year, and the Dynamite Series team Untitled, as well as with the indie teams Neighborhood Watch and Bad Kitten. You may also see her photographs around the comedy scene from her photography business, Sam Abrams Photography.

Before coming to PHIT in January 2014, Sam majored in theater with a focus on directing at Oberlin College, and spent three years developing and teaching drama classes at Camp Sequoia to build social skills. Sam adores teaching in the Kids and Teens program at PHIT.

WHAT STUDENTS SAY ABOUT SAM
“I liked my teacher because she laughed a lot at the stuff we did and made us feel funny. She also explained everything clearly.”
“She is very funny and motivates us to be goofy.”
“I liked how open minded she was.”
“She pushed me to be better at improv”

WHAT PARENTS SAY ABOUT SAM
“My son has not been a big participant in formal activities such as sports or school clubs because he never feels like he fits in with those. But with this he felt like he found his people, his tribe. Every week he had a great time, and that's a testament to how good you guys are. Thanks Sam and Kilo!”
“Sam was great! This class really gave my child an exciting new outlet, new skills, and new confidence!”

TEACHING ASSISTANT
Josh Tewell

ABOUT YOUR TEACHING ASSISTANT
Josh Tewell is joining the PHIT Kids & Teens faculty near the end of his second year in Philadelphia. Previous to living and performing here, he was traveling the country for several years, teaching theatre with Missoula Children’s Theatre (Jack and the Beanstalk), and performing/managing with Enchantment Theatre Company (Aladdin and Other Enchanting Tales, and Harold and the Purple Crayon). He also spent two summers teaching theatre to kids in New Hampshire at Camp Glen Brook, using improv, Shakespeare, and Commedia dell’Arte as his main tools. In 2007, he co-founded the Muhlenberg Improvisation Association at Muhlenberg College, which has been going strong since — and he’s excited to be getting back into the world of improv now!
