ABOUT ABOUT

Learn how to write a spec script for one of your favorite half-hour comedies on TV!

Have you always wanted to write for TV? Do you want to write a spec script or even an original pilot but don’t know where to start? Do you wish you had a structured environment and the support of a writers room to help you stick to deadlines and write the best script possible? In this 8 week workshop-style class led by local TV-writer-wannabe and 2-time Sundance Lab finalist Gab Bottoni, you’ll go through the process of writing a spec (or example script) for one of your favorite half-hour comedies currently on air. After learning the basics of screenwriting format and narrative structure, this class will provide the ultimate environment for young writers and seasoned spec-writers alike by mimicking a writers room. Together, we’ll choose a show to spec, break it down, craft a common A story, workshop our individual B and C stories, and write our own spec scripts. By the end of this course, you’ll have your very own first draft of a full script in your hands to polish and submit to writing fellowships in 2018.
No prior writing experience required!

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR
Gab Bottoni has been a regular performer at the Philly Improv Theater since 2015 when she was cast on the Wednesday night Harold team, “Fjord" (RIP). Since then, she has performed as a member of the Saturday night House Team “Dutch,” the monthly "Page One," Sunday night’s “CORE” and the Halloween short-run show, "Stay Dead!." Gab graduated from the University of the Arts in 2016 with a BFA in Writing for Film & TV, where her senior thesis — an original, half-hour episodic comedy series — won her the Dr. Frederick P. Cornell Excellence in Writing Award, and made her the first writer in UArts history to win the highest academic achievement at the university, the President’s Award. Her original pilots have made her a semi-finalist in The Second City Sitcom Contest, and a short-list finalist in 2 writing labs just this year — the Episodic Storytelling Lab hosted by The Sundance Institute, and the New Voices Lab hosted by Sundance & YouTube. Gab continues to write original pilots and specs in all of her down time in hopes of "makin' it big" and has learned a lot along the way she'd like to share with you.
